The objective of this workshop was to summarize the experiences gained and to seek appropriate and effective approaches to deal with the existed problems associated with the final disposal of animal waste biomedical materials after all bureaus discussion and opinions exchange. In order to further improve the management of animal biomedical wastes, LHESP Gansu Office has successfully executed the biomedical waste final disposal workshop from May 18th to 19th with fully cooperation of the Gansu PMO, Anding Animal Husbandry Bureau and Anding District Government. This workshop was conducted in line with the AWP of the project and has incorporated provincial representatives from other four project provinces namely Chongqing, Jilin, Shanxi and Xinjiang. A total of 57 senior and junior leaders including from Gansu Provincial Agriculture and Husbandry Bureau, Gansu Veterinary Bureau, Gansu Animal Disease Control Centre, Gansu Animal Health Inspection Station, Dingxi City and Anding County Energy Office, Public Health Bureau, City Construction Bureau, Animal Husbandry Bureau, and from the Xinjiang, Jilin, Shanxi and Chongqing Animal Husbandry Bureaus, etc.
This workshop was chaired by Mr.Yuan Zhengda, Director of Foreign Economic Affairs Division of Gansu Provincial Agriculture and Husbandry Bureau and Mr. Qi Yonghe, Deputy Governor of Anding District Government gave an opening speech. Mr. Alex Schumacher, environmental expert and vice president of Agriteam Canada delivered speech on behalf of LHESP.
Since July, 2009, LHESP Gansu Office with the cooperation of the Anding AHB has conducted two sessions of workshops including field visit, technical training and poster development focused on two demonstration sites, Neiguan and Cankou townships.
The first day morning was taken by opening ceremony and presentation by Mr. Alex Schumacher on a topic of “Why livestock workers must be concerned about the environment?” and followed by Mr. Zhang Hui report on the biomedical wastes management progress in Dingxi and field visits were done to Neiguan Veterinary Station, Xitai Animal Raising Ltd. Company, Private Vet Clinic and Dingxi Wastes Disposal Company was conducted in the afternoon of the same day. During the morning of the second day, 4 presenters from other provinces introduced the experience they have gained and the achievements of their successes in biomedical waste disposal and general managements in their respective province. After that experts and senior officials from different levels delivered their views and opinions about how to deal with the issues encountered in biomedical final disposal mechanism, Dr. Alebel Yimam LTTA of LHESP Gansu office made a summary and conclusion remarks.
During the workshop, representatives provided some constructive suggestions:
1. Promote the influence of project activities;
2. Facilitate government to establish sustainable development mechanism;
3. Speed up the implementation of Animal Biomedical Waste Treatment Policy;
4. Enhance the biomedical Waste Containers;
5. Strengthen disseminating environment knowledge etc.
This workshop was successfully conducted with the support of all bureaus, which pushed forward the environment protection development and animal biomedical wastes management in Anding District. A financial agreement was made between the LHESP and The PMO to remove the deposited biomedical waste materials as soon as possible.
