Advanced risk analysis in veterinary public health, Qingdao (May 24-27, 2010)

Risk Analysis is a detailed examination including risk assessment, risk evaluation, and risk management alternatives, performed to understand the nature of unwanted, negative consequences to public health, property, or the environment. It is an analytical process to provide information regarding undesirable events; the process of quantification of the probabilities and expected consequences for identified risksects. Risk Analysis in Veterinary Public Health is a crucial tool to manage potentially harmful effects on both animal and human. The Chines ministry of Agriculture (MOA) formed an expert committee on animal health risk analysis in 2007. This created the need for more veterinarians with adequate risk analysis knowledge. Accordingly, an Advanced Veterinary Public Health Risk Analysis Workshop was held by the Livestock Health Extension Services Project (LHESP) in conjunction with the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center (CAHEC) in Qingdao on May 24-27, 2010 as a sequence to a previous Risk Analysis training held on November 2008 in Qingdao.

Dr. Javier Sanchez, Research Chair on Risk Analysis, Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, was invited by the LHESP to provide the training. Dr. Zhang Yanhai and Dr. Shen Chaojian from CAHEC, who were trained in animal health risk analysis at Atlantic Veterinary College in 2010, acted as teaching assistant.

Provincial and national level veterinarians previously trained in fundamentals of risk analysis acquired advanced risk analysis knowledge and skills. Through a combination of lectures and practical sessions, intermediate qualitative as well as quantitative risk analysis concepts were taught. The participants learned how to use professional software such as pop tools and Win Episcope. The trainees worked through a series of case studies based on animal health case studies and a variety of health scenarios. Exercises involved the use of personal computers developing intermediate quantitative risk analysis models.

This activity was attended by veterinary professionals from the seven LHESP sites. Additionally, Prof. Lu Changhua and Mr. Zang Yitian from the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences participated in this activity. The participants concluded that Animal Health Risk Analysis is critical and useful for them to provide scientific animal health risk information to decision makers. At the end of training, the participant feedback evaluation scores were better (grade4) and best (grade5), 22.02% and 70.83% respectively.
