The cattle raising industry is the most important segment of agricultural production in Yanbian Prefecture. The Yan Huang Breed is recognized as one of the fine beef breeds in China. The purpose of the training was to give veterinarians and technical staff an improved understanding of methods to control and prevent epidemic diseases, to develop a better understanding of how to raise healthy, good quality beef animals and to improve options on marketing beef to other parts of China and to other countries. With the great support and co-operation of the Yanbian Prefecture AHB and the Yanbian Prefecture Animal Husbandry Station, the
LHESP presented the Cattle Disease Prevention and Control Workshop in Yanbian Prefecture on May 10th -11th and May 12th-13th , 2010.
This training had the great opportunity to have the participation of the Canadian experts Don Milligan, Lynda Nicholls, and also the participation of Madame Wu. Canadian Capacity Development Specialist of LHESP, Don Milligan gave a presentation about traceability and animal identification. Mr. Li Baogen, Assistant Manager of BPO and acting manager of Jilin PO, also attended and made a presentation. Dr. Lu Cheng and Dr. Liang Wanfeng from Agricultural College of Yanbian University talked about disease prevention and control. Participants were AHWs from the Prefecture, County and township level and health and quality technicians from key farms and the beef industry. Some MTOT members from the different tiers also attended this training. In total, 128 participants attended this training, 108 men and 20 women. Of these participants, 61 were from minorities. For the first session of this training there were 70 participants; 58 men and 12 women and of these 36 were from minorities. For the second training there were 58 participants; 50 men and 8 women and 25 of these were from minorities.
From this training, participants gained further understanding on disease prevention and control, for example, emphysematous gangrene, esophageal obstruction, rumen acidosis, traumatic reticulitis and various types of toxic diseases, etc. Participants also have a better understanding on the different identification methods, especially radio frequency ID (RFID). They also see the importance of the use of ID from farm to market. At the beginning of training, MTOT core member, Jin Chengfan collected training needs through group discussion. This reinforced this training method with the other MTOT members in attendance. Participants expressed satisfaction with this training. From the feedback, we can see that they liked this type of participatory training and thought this training gave more opportunities to interact and learn. They absorbed new knowledge on cattle raising and on disease prevention and learned advanced concepts of Canadian disease prevention and cattle raising.
