and control  (Nov. 26-28, 2009, Chongqing)

The potential risk and outbreaks of zoonosis has seriously impacted on Chinese Animal Production and food safety and now it has become a grave concern in the local society. The Chinese Animal Disease Control Centre (CADCC) together with the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and with the assistance of Chongquing Animal Disease Control Centre sponsored a workshop in order to enhance the level of ability to prevent, control, inhibit the spread of zoonostic diseases and protect public health. This workshop took place in Chongqing. There were more than 100 participants representing veterinarians and technical staff from all provinces from China. The workshop was inaugurated by the Deputy Director Animal disease control Centre China, Mr. Wang Gogming and the Deputy Director of Agricultural Committee, Chongquing Prof. Wang Jian, giving the opening speeches. Mr. MA Shichun, the Director of Veterinary Public Health Division of China Chaired the work shop.

Dr. Tissa Galappathy, LHESP Canadian long term technical advisor (LTTA) in Chongqing, presented the strategy used by Canadian authorities to eradicated Brucellosis from Canada. Dr. Galappathy’s presentation had three sections namely, an introduction, special eradication plan of Brucellosis and general prevention and control plan. An interesting participatory and active discussion ensued after the presentation, where all participants showed very keen interest specially on the eradication plan and the general plan on prevention and control of diseases which helps to maintain disease free status in Canada. From this interaction, it was concluded that China has the potential to eradicate brucellosis using a scientific approach based on the experience of other brucellosis free countries, the training of more veterinarians and AHW on new technology, new testing programs, new vaccines, new legislation, information technology and animal identification. Also it was conclude that, in order to control and eradicate brucellosis, China faces considerable challenges such as the presence of many Brucella strains and sharing borders with several countries.
