With support from the Livestock Health Extension Services project (LHESP) and theYanbian prefecture Animal Health Bureau (AHB), the animal medicine waste management mobilization activity titled “Love Longjing, Protect the Environment” was held in Longjing City on November 4, 2008. The animal medicine workers from the county and township veterinarian stations of Longjing city, from the animal hospital of Longjing Agricultural Science Academy, from the animal hospital of Yanbian University Agricultural College and from big scale farms attended this activity.

The activity was hosted by Mr. Huo Wei, the head of the Longjing AHB.
Mr. Jin Chengfan, the deputy head of Longjing AHB, began the meeting by reading the Notification of Animal Medicine Waste Management issued by the Longjing AHB.
Madame Piao Zhushun, the director from the Longjing Environment Bureau, followed this with a speech which laid the foundation for the documents of environment protection which will be issued by the AHB and the Environment Bureau in the future.
The third part was the response by a delegate of the county animal medicine about the importance of animal medicine waste management.
Next, Dr. Paul Schneider, LHESP Canadian expert from Yanji spoke on the importance of animal medicine waste management and planning for the future.
Mr. An Zeman, the deputy mayor of Longjing City, gave words of great support for this kind of activity and appreciation of LHESP’s support for Longjing animal health work.
Mr. Huo Wei concluded the formal speeches with an explanation of the use of the medicine waste containers made by LHESP.
The deputy mayor An Zeman, Dr. Paul Schneider and Mr, Liu Guiqiu acting as delegates of the animal medicine institutions formally presented the first set of containers and the notification posters to delegates of the township veterinary stations and the large livestock farms.
This activity followed the issuing of the notification of animal medicine waste by Longjing AHB earlier this year. Under the help of LHESP, the notification of medicine waste management was made to the poster and this was sent to the delegates as one criterion for the duties of veterinary practitioners.
This notification and implementation of this animal medical waste management in the Longjing pilot county is the first activity of its type in China. It strengthens their recognition of environmental protection and contributes to the “One World, One Health” concept for future animal health work in the county.
