Organized by LHESP and PMO of WB in Gansu, a training session on methodology for animal epidemic disease surveys was held in Dingxi. (March 12th - 17th, 2007). The Dingxi Animal Husbandry Bureau provided the facilities for the course. Thirty veterinarians form Anding, Lintao, Jinyuan and Jintai counties, Gansu province took part. Most of the participants were either county or township veterinarians involved with livestock disease diagnosis and epidemic disease control. Officers from Gansu WB PMO local government, CTA and LHESP participated in this activity. The lectures were given by three senior veterinarians.
The training focused on control methods for swine and ovine epidemic diseases, rapid test kit, pathology sampling, common pig diseases; egg identification in sheep feces dissection, blood sampling; data analysis and reporting (using parasitic diseases as a model). Local specialist exchanged experiences on animal diseases and the prevention strategy used in the past years. The training also focused on the most important sheep epidemic diseases and strategies to decrease their incidence. During discussions the course participants summarized the local most common and frequent animal diseases. During this activity some practical hand-on training to collect pathology samples was carried out. These samples will be sent for analysis and results will be presented in future workshops.
During the training all participants had the opportunity to acquire practical experience and were highly satisfied with the new knowledge and ideas that were transferred to them.
At the end of the course, the Officer from provincial PMO said, “this course produced good results. Good subject, the survey methodology is feasible and practical; first-class lecturers with rich professional experience; excellent participants actively implicated in the course; first-rate facility provided by local partners”. The Participants strongly believed that the newly acquired knowledge will be put into practice to promote animal disease control contributing to a better quality of life in their hometowns.
