Training Courses on Poultry Disease Prevention & Production, Environment Awareness & Management held at Longjing, Yanbian Prefecture

  • On July 2nd -4th, 2008 a training course on Poultry Disease Prevention and Production was held in Lonjin County, Yanbian Prefecture. This course was conducted with our local partners, the Yanbian Animal Husbandry Bureau (AHB), in accordance with the Annual Work Plan of the Livestock Health Extension Services Project (LHESP) and was planned in response to the rapid development of poultry production in Yanbian Prefecture. The course goals were to enhance the ability of veterinarians, animal health workers (AHWs), the technicians and the owners of poultry farms in the control of the poultry diseases. Twenty seven (27) participants (9 females, 33.33% of participants; 16 minority, 59.26% of participants) involved in animal health from the prefecture, county and township levels attended the training.

With consideration to the importance of environmental protection in poultry production and disease prevention, Environmental Awareness and Management, with 18 participants, (8 females, 44.44% of participants, 12 minority, 66.66% of participants) was also delivered over this time.

In addition to the information delivered, these training sessions provided the opportunity to further the sustainable development of animal health service expansion in the area by providing a platform for the trainers to fully communicate among themselves, to practice opportunities for teaching and facilitation, to improve their training materials and to further learn and practice the participatory method of training.

Mr. Li Baogen, Senior Adviser and Training Coordinator of LHESP and Mr. Liu Guiqiu, Deputy Director of Yanbian AHB attended the entire training and were very helpful in guiding the group discussions during the 2 courses. Mr Li brought copies of the newly published book related to poultry production diseases and prevention from Beijing. Each participant received a copy and they found it to be very useful and helpful. Some of the material will be used in the training materials developed by the Longjing team.

The first section of the seminar was an update on the recent situation of avian influenza (AI) and other major diseases in China and in the world. This was given by Dr. Huang Baoxu, Chief Scientist of China Animal Epidemiology Prevention Center.

The second section was “focusing on practice”. Dr. Liang Wanfeng, professor from the Agricultural College of Yanbian University gave a vivid presentation of common chicken diseases focusing on the local animal diseases, clinical signs, diagnoses, prevention and treatment. Other presentations were from Mr. Wang Gang, one of the participants and the manager of the Livestock Breeding Station of Yanbian Prefecture, who introduced his experiences on chicken disease diagnoses during his dissection of sick chickens for the participants. The Longjing team delivered, on a trial basis, Chicken Disease Prevention and Production based on their newly developed materials. Other participants also actively contributed various ideas according to their own working experiences. The participants played both the role of facilitators and of student and therefore the greater result has been achieved through this way of training.

The third section of the seminar emphasized environmental protection. Ms. Gao Jianhong and Ms. Zhao Dazhuo, LHESP Chinese technical advisor (CTA) and contact person on environment protection in the Jilin Site Office, gave presentations On-Farm Bio-security, Safe Disposal of Animal Carcasses and Rational Use of Veterinary Drugs. The facilitators and participants discussed the existing environmental problems and tried to find workable solutions to some of the problems. The detailed procedures required for proper disposal of medical wastes in order to better protect the environment was evident in all the training materials developed by the 5 groups and in their presentations.

An important part of this seminar was the Korean language translation. In order to make Korean participants better understand the content of the training, some Korean participants from the AHB - Epidemic Prevention Center of Longjing worked overtime translating the materials into Korean. During the presentation, discussion, questions and answers, Korean was used whenever necessary. This contributed to a very good result in the training of the entire group of participants. The training courses exemplified the LHESP’s principles and concepts of veterinary technical training, MTOT principles, environment protection and ethnic group participation. And with the thorough communication and collaboration with the Yanbian AHB, who fully committed all necessary time and resources, the objectives of training were well achieved and most of participants were well satisfied with the outcome of the seminar.

Soon after this training seminar, Lynda Nicholls and Wu Jie of the LHESP MTOT team came to Yanbian once again from July 14 to 17 with the focus on further direction and help to the Longjing team in their training materials and delivery skills. Organized and financed by the local partner, another seminar was held in Longjing. Mr. Li Baogen, Mr. Liu Quiqiu, and Dr. Paul Schneider, LTTA of Jilin Office, who delivered a presentation of Food Safety on the Farm during the seminar, were in attendance for the 4 day training activity. After a few practices and hard work, with the help of the teachers and the participants from the other teams, the training materials and the skills of the participating trainers improved significantly. The new training and presentation methods were used on July 16 and 17, when the pilot county training team successfully performed a training seminar for the township veterinarians in Longjing. It was effective and welcomed by the township vets, who were eager to use the same materials and the same methods to train village animal health workers and farmers. The LHESP has operated in Yanbian for two years. The core group of trainers is growing fast in all aspects of training, such as vet technique, competence, training method, policy and regulations, attitude and awareness. Many sets of training materials are under development targeted to the local animal situation and the needs of local AHWs and farmers. Delivery to the local AHWs and farmers is a growing priority supported by all the possible fund resources. The project is impacting the entire Yanbian Prefecture, and has certainly come into blossom and will bear some sweet fruits.
