Xinjiang Rangeland Forum Closed up on July 8, 2008

Xinjiang Rangeland Forum was completed on July 8, 2008. The forum was co-organized by the Department of Xinjiang Animal Husbandry. Some 85 officials, animal and grassland specialists and extensionists from 9 prefectures and 24 counties in the World Bank project area attended the meeting. The meeting also attracted professors and researchers from Xinjiang Agriculture University and the Institute of Xinjiang Animal Husbandry. Mr. Lai Jinggang, deputy director general of the Department of Xinjiang Animal Husbandry, and Brant Kirychuk, manager of SADP addressed the opening ceremony. Mr. Wang Wanlin, party secretary of Xinjiang PMO, and Mr Fang Guangxin, director of Xinjiang PMO chaired the forum. The objectives of this forum were to summarize and share successful experiences, especially Canadian experiences, on grassland utilization and management and to discuss the technical and policy solutions to challenges of grassland degradation in Xinjiang such that sustainable animal production can be maintained on healthy and productive rangeland. DDG Lai Jinggang extended his warmest welcome to Canadian TAs and all participants, saying that Xinjiang’s rangeland animal husbandry is facing some difficulties such as rangeland degradation, and at the same time is having opportunities to make a great step forward under supports from national, provincial and international programs. He appreciated Canadian experiences in sustainable rangeland animal production and the work done by SADP in Xinjiang. Brant, Bazil, Jason and Runhou delivered various topics from rangeland health, fencing, water system on rangeland, working with herders to establish a demo site, extension etc to issues in Xinjiang’s sustainable livestock production. Professor An Shazhou from Xinjiang Agriculture University talked about rangeland resources management by the 3S technology. Mr. Li Zhu from the grassland section of the Department of Xinjiang Animal Husbandry delivered a presentation on the strategy of grassland development in Xinjiang with deep analyses on current status. Representatives from Yili Prefecture, Tacheng District, Tekesi county and Fuyun county shared their lessons and experiences on rangeland management and utilization. The development of Xinjiang rangeland has received strong financial and technical supports from SADP, GEF and WB projects, and these projects have brought not only funds but more importantly new ideas and technologies which will definitely have long term and profound impacts on Xinjiang’s rangeland management and utilization. Actually, we have already seen some positive changes made by these projects. Local media such as Xinjiang Broadcasting Station, Xinjiang Economy Newspaper, and Xinjiang Municipal Newspaper interviewed participants and broadcasted the news from the forum.
