From July 28 to July 30, 2008, the China-Canada Small Farmers Adapting to Global Markets Project (SFAGM) held a training program on Food Safety, Quality Management System and Related Standards in Urumqi, Xinjiang. The 40 participates included leaders and technicians from the agriculture sector and inspection organizations in 14 prefectures as well as persons responsible for inspection of MOA appointed wholesale markets of agricultural products and people from Xinjiang Agriculture Department. Among the trainees, 11 are female and 7 are of ethnic minorities.
The training is one of the seven business & management training modules developed by SFAGM project. Six trainings have been successfully held over the past three years. As governments at all levels and agriculture industry attach great importance to the quality of agricultural products, Canada-China Sustainable Agriculture Development Project and the Xinjiang Agriculture Department requested that SFAGM project hold the training in Xinjiang. The training aims to help Xinjiang Agriculture Department implement the Law on Quality Safety of Agricultural Products, further enhance local producer’s awareness of quality safety and the sense of responsibility, regulate agricultural products business, and holistically enhance the level of quality safety management and agricultural production in Xinjiang.
The training comprises seven topics and one field study, involving the Law on Quality Safety of Agricultural Products and the new requirements by emerging markets, the Canadian agricultural products quality safety system, the status quo of Chinese food and agricultural products certification and analysis, HACCP food safety certification, and the status quo of agricultural products quality safety and supervision in Xinjiang. The training helped the participants better understand the Law on Quality Safety of Agricultural Products.
During the training, the participants observed how agricultural products quality safety is ensured and implemented and the entire process of “farm produces from farm to table”, visited organic rice fields and pollution-free eggplant production base and local vegetable testing organizations, wholesale markets, supermarkets and hotels. The farmers’ production records are made into files to help track the quality of agricultural products.
Beijing HSL Certification Service was commissioned by SFAGM to host the training assisted by Xinjiang Agriculture Department. The training assessment shows that it has reached the expected results.
