Training session on BSE Testing Technologies, Beijing

  • On May 19, 2008, the training session on BSE Testing Technologies was held at Beijing Xiedao Village, co-hosted by China-Canada Small Farmers Adapting to Global Markets Project (SFAGM) and the Export & Import Food Safety Bureau of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. Mr. Lin Wei, Vice Director of the Bureau, and Mr. Kevin Chen, manager of the SFAGM Project, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. This one-week training on BSE testing technologies will be provided to 29 technicians from 14 provinces/municipalities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shaanxi, Shenzhen, Inner Mongolia, Shenyang, Xinjiang, Shandong, etc. Together with her assistant Renee Clark, Dr. Stefanie Czub, Canadian foremost authority on BSE and Head of Canadian National BSE Reference Laboratory (OIE), was invited to teach the trainees on clinical symptoms, prevention and control measure, methods of lab testing (including sampling) of BSE.

    Dr. Czub and her assistant arrived in China on May 10 and had a week-long technical exchange with Beijing BSE Lab. The two experts made a comprehensive study on Beijing BSE Lab, and joined the Lab staff in BSE pathology examination, immune histochemistry, Prionic Western Blot, Prionic testing, and had proposed improvements in biosecurity levels, maintenance of testing equipment, lab water use, waste and sewage disposal, SOP, etc.

    This visit enhanced BSE testing technologies, lab management, quality assurance and control in China, and has built a friendly platform for future exchange and cooperation between China and Canada on the testing, prevention and control of BSE.
