Title

Veterinary Medical Officer, Beijing Program Office
Timing July 1, 2008– June 30, 2009
Level of Effort Full time, 1 year starting on July 1st, 2008

Minimum requirements: A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree obtained from a recognized School of Veterinary Medicine with a minimum academic program of 4 years.

Languages: Proficiency in Chinese and English.

Description:

The Veterinary Medical Officer will work in the Livestock Health Extension Services Project (LHESP) within the context of the LHESP Emergency Response to the Sichuan earthquake. The veterinary officer will assist the LHESP long and short term specialist to review the policies on Emergency Response Programs in Canada and China.

Specific tasks include but are not limited to:

  1. Preparation of a summary overview of emergency response programs in Canada, China and other relevant locations.

  2. Desk review of relevant programs including CFIA Emergency Response plans, Canadian Veterinary Reserve and Vets Without Boarders and China’s existing plans.

  3. Review status of early warning systems: Review disease monitoring systems for the earthquake affected areas. Identify priorities for capacity building.

  4. Emergency Food Safety Inspection Programs: Utilizing the CFIAs documented plans for emergency slaughter and remote-location slaughter protocols, recommendations for strengthening the Chinese emergency inspection system would be made.

  5. Publication of public awareness materials related to emergency response plans and procedures, disposal of livestock carcasses and other possible veterinary public health issues in earthquake and other disaster zones.

  6. Coordinate the translation of relevant papers and reference materials identified through the Policy Review for distribution to agencies in the affected areas.

Salary will be commensurate with experience
